HOOSIER VINTAGE THUNDERBIRD CLUB, INC. NEWS July, 2009 Dear Club Members, On June 20th, members of Hoosier Vintage Thunderbird Club drove to the town of Centerville, Indiana, near Richmond. There we visited The Model T Ford Museum, The Warm Glow Candle Factory Outlet, lunch at The Blue Monkey, and then a tour of a local Antique Mall. We were hosted by our sister club, The Vintage Thunderbird Club of Indiana. Also included were Roger Cowden and members of The Southwest Ohio Thunderbird Club. Both of the Indiana clubs have been hosting each other now for several years. With the inclusion of the Southwest Ohio Thunderbird Club, we hope to now make it a three club yearly event. Our thanks to Mike Sercer and the members of VTCIn and especially to Andy Toth who planned such an outstanding day for all of us. Joining us were Greg and Amy Minnich driving their 1955 Thunderbird Convertible, Doug and Karen McConnell driving their 1956 Thunderbird Convertible, and Jeff Evans who rode with me in my 2002 Convertible. Meeting us there were Bob and Carole Tucker driving Carole's new Miata MX5 Retractable Hardtop. This is a very cool car and the hardtop is an engineering marvel. The hardtop folds up in less than 12 seconds and doesn't take up trunk space. Since we had a two hour drive to Centerville, we stopped for breakfast in Portland. Our little Birds created our own mini car show in the parking lot. Although we didn't have a great turnout from our club this time, (it was Father's Day Weekend, also lots of weddings planned for the day) when we got to Centerville the whole parking lot was filled with beautiful THUNDERBIRDS! As always, it was great to meet up with old friends and to make new ones. The Model T Museum included a 1914 Touring Car (one of the first assembly line autos) to a 1927 Coupe (the last year T's were built) and everything in between. It showcases the car that "Put the world on Wheels." It also includes a 1917 TT Dump Truck, a 1923 English built Town Car, a fire truck, a farm truck, a 1926 dirt track racer, a cutaway demo engine and transmission, plus a 1924 Army Ambulance. The Warm Glow Candle Factory Outlet had something for everyone. Lunch at the Blue Monkey was very good, and the Antique Mall that we toured was so large, we didn't event get to see all of it. Our next club event will be the "Flashback to The 60's" Classic Car Cruise-In on Friday, July 17th. It is from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM and is hosted by The Country Cruisers. The location is the campus of Huntington University, Huntington, In. They will feature NSRA Safety Inspections so get your Bird inspected while you are there. They will have 40 "Just Because" Awards, plus many Specialty Awards. A 50/50 drawing, and door prizes. See you there! Also, since we have a reputation to maintain of being Indiana's most active Thunderbird Club, get up bright and early the next morning for The '41st' Annual Three Rivers Festival Car Show and Swap Meet on Saturday July 19th. This is always one of our best attended events and we are antisipating that some of our long distance members will be there. It is a rain or shine event from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The location is Lawton Park, 1900 N. Clinton Street in Fort Wayne. Top 50 Awards 1978 and older, Special Awards, 1979 and newer. Drive through judging by The Rolling Classics Car Club. We will meet at 9:00 AM at our usual rendezvous spot for this event, the old Kroger Store parking lot just North of the park at N. Clinton/State Blvd./Spy Run Ave. where we will line up oldest to newest to make our dramatic entrance. I have heard from our newest club members, Rob and Velen Webb from Noblesville, Indiana. They are the proud owners of a stunning Torch Red 1955 Thunderbird. They just got the car back from having an all new interior installed and can't wait to join us on an upcoming excursion. We look forward to having them join us. 2009 VTCI International Convention, Coshocton, Ohio, Sept. 2-6. For late entry's who still want to go to the convention, the latest report is that the Convention Hotel is full. The over-flow hotel is The Super 8, (740 622 8899). The rate is a little cheaper and a shuttle will be provided to the main hotel. Be sure to mention that you are with the Thunderbird Club for the special rate. An application for the convention can be printed from the VTCI website http://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.org or it is in the Scoop magazine. I suggest that very soon would be a good thing, it will be here before we know it. This article was sent to me by club member's Bob and Carole Tucker. A Little INDIANA humor Forget Rednecks, here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Hoosiers.... If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through May, you may live in Indiana. If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you may live in Indiana. If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Indiana. If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Indiana. If 'Vacation' means going anywhere south of Muncie for the weekend, you may live in Indiana. If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Indiana. If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in Indiana. If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' in the same day and back again, you may live in Indiana. If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you may live in Indiana. If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you may live in Indiana. If you carry jumpers in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Indiana. If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you may live in Indiana. If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph--you're going 80 and everybody is passing you, you may live in Indiana. If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you may live in Indiana. If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction, you may live in Indiana. If you have more miles on your snow blower than your car, you may live in Indiana. If you find 10 degrees 'a little chilly' you just may live in Indiana. If you understand these jokes, you definitely live in Indiana! That's all for this month, see you on July 17th and 18th!
