36th Annual Thunderbird Rendezvous
Our travels began on Friday, October 4th at 9am, following the scenic U.S. 24 route across Indiana and Illinois. The club members attending were Roger Noll and friend Pat, Wayne Settlemeyer, Darrell and Susan Will, Kevin and Diane Mark, and Carlos and Gina Rodrigue We arrived around 1pm at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Normal, Illinois and we were quickly greeted by our hosts, Terry and Dusty Fletcher of the Land of Lincoln club. The hospitality room was set up early allowing us to relax, enjoy refreshments and snacks, and meet all new arrivals. Later that evening there was a pizza party with refreshments. During that time there was a drawing of door prizes. Our own Wayne Settlemeyer, won the top prize of one night free during the show.
Saturday morning started early with a bus trip to nearby Pekin Ill. to view a private car collection at a custom paint and body shop. After our first tour, it was off to a nearby old school that was converted to a privately owned lifetime collection of memorabilia that covered every square inch of anything imaginable. Both spots were very fun and enjoyable. We finished Saturday evening with a short trip to Alexander's Steak House for dinner and camaraderie.
Sunday 8:30am -time to get our vehicles cleaned up and registered for the voting. The peoples choice voting was from 11:30 to 1:30 for the best in twelve different categories. The awards presentation followed at 3 pm. The winners from our club were as follows: Wayne Settlemeyer, 64-66 open first place, Darrell and Susan Will, 61-63 closed second place, Kevin and Diane Mark, retro third place, Roger Noll, modified third place. We then departed for a late arrival at home
In a short follow up, I would like to say that our hosts did everything they could to keep the trip short, enjoyable, fun, and inexpensive. Our costs were pizza party with beer, wine and soft drinks $5.00 each, Steak house cost depended on your selections, Bus trip $15.00 each, and family registration $15.00 each. The hotel was booked at $99.00 each night. Add your gas costs and you will see what was probably the least expensive show this year and just as fun.
